OUR STORY & PHILOSOPHY

Martha & Bee was created during the first lockdown of 2020 by Emma Corner when she realised there was a need for colourful, uplifting homewares whilst we all spend more time working and being at home. The company was named after her daughter Bea and her studio companion - her little Pug dog Martha.

Emma spent 20 years running her own interior design business before moving to Cornwall in 2013. After graduating with BA (Hons) Surface Pattern & Printed Textiles in 2019, Emma became a freelance textile designer, working for a UK print studio who sell designs all around the world. She has a passion for all things 'home' and patterned. Her personal favourite style is novelty print and she admires the work of mid century textile artists such as Lucienne Day and Scandinavian designers such as Josef Frank and Marimekko.

All the designs for Martha & Bee are hand drawn by Emma. After drawing inspiration from her Cornish coastal and country surroundings she returns to her studio to start the design process. This could be drawing, collage, watercolour, screen printing, digital art or mark making. The designs are then rendered digitally to allow them to repeat for fabric prints. Once the colourful and imaginative designs are complete they are then carefully printed onto hand selected homewares by British manufacturers.

Living in Cornwall and being immersed in nature every day means Martha & Bee are very aware of the importance of taking care of the environment. Being eco-friendly is at the heart of everything they do, from using British manufacturers to reduce air miles, using eco friendly materials such as eucalyptus based melamine for coasters and 100% organic half panama cotton for textile products.

Emma loves creating and she hopes this love shines through in her cheery designs to bring joy, love, colour and fun to your home.
